ทางการอิหร่านจับกุมผู้ประท้วงกว่า 1,200 คน ในการปราบปรามการประท้วงที่ดำเนินต่อเนื่องมาถึงคืนที่ 10 สืบเนื่องจากการเสียชีวิตของสตรีชาวเคิร์ด มาห์ซา อะมินี ระหว่างการถูกตำรวจศีลธรรมของอิหร่านควบคุมตัวด้วยข้อหาสวมฮิญาบไม่เรียบร้อย

กลุ่มสิทธิมนุษยชน แอมเนสตี้ อินเตอร์เนชันแนล กล่าวว่า มีหลักฐานว่ากองกำลังความมั่นคงอิหร่านสลายผู้ประท้วงโดยใช้วิธีที่มิชอบด้วยกฎหมาย เช่น ใช้กระสุนลูกปราย แก๊สน้ำตา เครื่องฉีดน้ำแรงดันสูง รวมถึงใช้กระบองทุบตีผู้ชุมนุม ขณะที่บรรดาผู้ประท้วงตอบโต้ด้วยก้อนหิน และจุดไฟเผายานพาหนะของตำรวจ

กลุ่มสิทธิมนุษยชน IHR รายงานในวันอาทิตย์ว่า มีผู้ประท้วงเสียชีวิตอย่างน้อย 57 คน ขณะที่สื่อของทางการอิหร่านระบุว่า มีการจับกุมผู้ประท้วงราว 450 คนที่จังหวัดมาซานดาราน และอีกกว่า 700 คนที่จังหวัดกีลาน

หัวหน้าอัยการจังหวัดมาซานดาราน โมฮัมหมัด คาริมี กล่าวกับสื่อของทางการอิหร่าน IRNA ว่า "ผู้ประท้วงพากันโจมตีอาคารของรัฐบาลและทำลายทรัพย์สินสาธารณะ" พร้อมกล่าวหาว่า มีเจ้าหน้าที่จต่างชาติเป็นผู้ปลุกปั่นความวุ่นวายในอิหร่านครั้งนี้

ทางการอิหร่านใช้วิธีปิดกั้นการเผยแพร่ข่าวการประท้วงตามสื่อสังคมออนไลน์ต่าง ๆ รวมทั้ง อินสตาแกรม (Instagram) และวอทส์แอปป์ (WhatsApp) แต่ยังคงมีวิดีโอการประท้วงจำนวนมากถูกเผยแพร่ออกมาในวันอาทิตย์ แสดงให้เห็นผู้คนจำนวนมากชุมนุมตามท้องถนนในกรุงเตหะราน เมืองยาซห์ เมืองอิซฟาฮาน และเมืองบูเชห์ร

องค์กรสิทธิมนุษยชนชาวเคิร์ด Hengaw เปิดเผยว่า มีการประท้วงที่เมืองแซกเกซ บ้านเกิดของอะมินี ท่ามกลางการควบคุมอย่างเข้มงวดของกองทัพอิหร่าน และมีรายงานว่าเด็กหญิงวัย 10 ขวบผู้หนึ่งถูกยิงที่เมืองบูกาน และถูกนำตัวส่งโรงพยาบาลแล้ว

เมื่อวันอาทิตย์ โจเซฟ บอร์เรลล์ หัวหน้าฝ่ายนโยบายต่างประเทศของสหภาพยุโรป มีแถลงการณ์ประณามรัฐบาลอิหร่าน โดยชี้ว่า "การใช้กำลังอย่างกว้างขวางและไม่เหมาะสมต่อผู้ประท้วงอย่างสันติ เป็นสิ่งที่ไม่ถูกต้องและไม่อาจยอมรับได้" และว่า "อียูจะพิจารณาทางเลือกทั้งหมดที่มีอยู่เพื่อจัดการกับเหตุการณ์สังหารมาห์ซา อะมินี และการกระทำของรัฐบาลอิหร่านต่อบรรดาผู้ประท้วง"

เมื่อสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว ประธานาธิบดีโจ ไบเดน แห่งสหรัฐฯ กล่าวที่การประชุมสมัชชาใหญ่สหประชาชาติ ณ นครนิวยอร์ก สดุดีบรรดาผู้ประท้วงในอิหร่าน และว่า "อเมริกายืนเคียงข้างประชาชนและสตรีผู้กล้าหาญของอิหร่าน ผู้ซึ่งชุมนุมแสดงจุดยืนเพื่อรักษาสิทธิขั้นพื้นฐานของพวกเขา"
