องค์กรระหว่างประเทศเพื่อผู้อพยพหรือ IOM คาดว่ามีผู้เสียชีวิตราว 72 คนในช่วงไม่กี่วันมานี้ ขณะพยายามเดินทางข้ามทะเลเมดิเตอเรเนียนจากตุรกีไปยังเกาะแห่งหนึ่งของกรีซ และเมื่อต้นเดือนเจ้าหน้าที่รักษาการณ์ชายฝั่งของตุรกีรายงานว่า มีผู้อพยพ 13 คนเสียชีวิตในน่านน้ำของตุรกีเช่นกัน

เวลานี้ประเทศที่แบกรับภาระด้านผู้อพยพไว้มากที่สุด คือประเทศที่มีพรมแดนติดทะเลเมดิเตอเรเนียน เช่น กรีซและอิตาลี ที่ต้องการให้มีการจัดสรรโควต้าเพื่อแบ่งเบาภาระนี้ แต่ประเทศเล็กๆซึ่งส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในยุโรปตอนกลางไม่ต้องการรับข้อเสนอที่ว่านี้

เมื่อ 10 ปีก่อน ทาง IOM ได้จัดให้มีโทรศัพท์สายด่วน “157 Helpline” ในตุรกี เพื่อให้ประชาชนช่วยแจ้งเบาะแสเกี่ยวกับขบวนการลักลอบขนผู้อพยพเข้าเมืองผ่านทะเลเมดิเตอเรเนียนและทะเลเอเจี้ยน ปัจจุบันโทรศัพท์สายด่วน 157 นี้กลายเป็นช่องทางหลักสำหรับผู้อพยพจำนวนมากที่ต้องการความช่วยเหลือ

ด้านสำนักงานข้าหลวงใหญ่ผู้ลี้ภัยของสหประชาชาติ ระบุว่าวิกฤติการณ์ผู้อพยพในยุโรปครั้งนี้ จะสามารถผ่านพ้นไปได้ หากประเทศสมาชิกสหภาพยุโรปร่วมมือกันหาวิธีจัดการ และว่าหากไม่สามารถตกลงกันได้ ยุโรปเองจะเป็นภูมิภาคที่ได้รับผลกระทบมากที่สุดจากปัญหานี้

ขณะที่บรรดาผู้อพยพและผู้ลี้ภัยเหล่านั้นก็จะไม่สามารถหลุดพ้นจากความเจ็บปวด จากการที่ต้องพรากจากภูมิลำเนาและรอนแรมจากประเทศหนึ่งไปอีกประเทศหนึ่งอย่างไม่มีวันสิ้นสุด
