นายกฯอังกฤษ David Cameron ประกาศรับผู้ลี้ภัยชาวซีเรียเข้าประเทศอีก 20,000 คนในช่วง 5 ปีข้างหน้า โดยจะส่งมาจากค่ายผู้ลี้ภัยในตุรกี จอร์แดนและเลบานอน ซึ่งจะช่วยให้ผู้ลี้ภัยเหล่านั้นเดินทางมายังอังกฤษโดยตรงได้อย่างปลอดภัย

เวลานี้ทางสหภาพยุโรปกำลังพิจารณานโยบายกระจายผู้ลี้ภัยจำนวน 120,000 คนไปยังประเทศสมาชิกของสหภาพยุโรปอย่างเท่าเทียมกันในช่วง 2 ปีข้างหน้า

ขณะเดียวกัน นาย David Milliband อดีตผู้นำพรรคแรงงานอังกฤษ ซึ่งปัจจุบันดำรงตำแหน่ง ผอ.คณะกรรมาธิการบรรเทาทุกข์ระหว่างประเทศหรือ IRC เรียกร้องให้สหรัฐฯและประเทศแถบอ่าวเปอร์เซีย เพิ่มความช่วยเหลือผู้ลี้ภัยชาวซีเรียมากขึ้น

นาย Milliband กล่าวว่าวิกฤติการณ์ผู้อพยพในยุโรปคือผลพวงของสงครามกลางเมืองในซีเรีย และความโหดร้ายในระบอบการปกครองของ ปธน.Bashar al-Assad ตลอดจนเป็นสิ่งที่แสดงให้เห็นถึงความล้มเหลวของประชาคมนานาชาติในการยุติความขัดแย้งในซีเรียที่กินเวลากว่า 4 ปี

ผอ. IRC ระบุว่า 4 ปีที่ผ่านมา สหรัฐฯรับผู้ลี้ภัยชาวซีเรียเข้าประเทศเพียง 1,400 คน ขณะที่ยังมีชาวซีเรียอาศัยอยู่ตามค่ายผู้ลี้ภัยในตุรกี จอร์แดนและเลบานอน อยู่ประมาณ 4 ล้าน 5 แสนคน ทาง IRC ต้องการให้สหรัฐฯแสดงบทบาทในฐานะผู้นำโครงการบรรเทาทุกข์ให้กับผู้ลี้ภัยเหล่านั้น ด้วยการยอมรับผู้ลี้ภัยชาวซีเรียเข้าประเทศเป็นจำนวนครึ่งหนึ่งของตัวเลขที่สหประชาชาติต้องการเห็น คือ 65,000 คน

นาย David Milliband ยังได้กล่าวยกย่องเยอรมนีที่ได้ประกาศรับผู้ลี้ภัย 800,000 คน เข้าประเทศในปีนี้ และเขายังได้เรียกร้องให้ประเทศในแถบอ่าวเปอร์เซียยอมแบ่งเบาภาระนี้ด้วยเช่นกัน

เมื่อสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว โฆษกทำเนียบขาว Josh Earnest ปฏิเสธเพิ่มจำนวนผู้ลี้ภัยชาวซีเรียที่จะได้รับสิทธิ์ลี้ภัยในสหรัฐฯ โดยให้เหตุผลว่า ที่ผ่านมาสหรัฐฯได้ให้ความช่วยเหลือในรูปแบบอื่นๆแก่ซีเรียเป็นจำนวนมากมายมหาศาลอยู่แล้ว

โฆษกทำเนียบขาวระบุว่าตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ 2011 รัฐบาลสหรัฐฯได้จัดส่งความช่วยเหลือด้านมนุษยธรรมให้แก่ผู้ที่ได้รับผลกระทบจากสงครามกลางเมืองในซีเรีย เป็นมูลค่ากว่า 4,000 ล้านดอลล่าร์ ซึ่งมากกว่าประเทศอื่นๆ

โฆษก Josh Earnest ชี้ด้วยว่า ปัจจุบันอเมริกาเองก็กำลังประสบปัญหาผู้ลักลอบเข้าเมืองหลายล้านคน ซึ่งถือเป็นปัญหาใหญ่ของรัฐบาลสหรัฐฯ

สุดสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา โฆษกกระทรวงการต่างประเทศสหรัฐฯ John Kirby กล่าวกับ Reuters ว่า สหรัฐฯอาจรับผู้ลี้ภัยชาวซีเรียได้เพียง 1,500 คนในปีนี้ รวมทั้งในปีหน้า

แต่อาจารย์ Jonathan Adelman แห่ง University of Denver ชี้ว่าภาพเด็กชายวัย 3 ขวบชาวซีเรียที่กลายเป็นร่างไร้ชีวิตนอนอยู่บนชายหาดของตุรกีเมื่อสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว จะยิ่งทำให้เกิดข้อถกเถียงมากขึ้นถึงบทบาทของสหรัฐฯในด้านผู้ลี้ภัย

อาจารย์ Adelman บอกว่าแม้สหรัฐฯจะมีปัญหาของตัวเองอยู่แล้ว แต่อีกไม่นานทางสหภาพยุโรปจะต้องร้องขอให้รัฐบาลอเมริกันยื่นมือเข้าช่วยในเรื่องการรับผู้ลี้ภัย

อย่างไรก็ตาม นักวิเคราะห์ผู้นี้เชื่อว่าประเด็นทางเศรษฐกิจและการเลือกตั้ง ปธน.ในปลายปีหน้า จะทำให้รัฐบาลสหรัฐฯหลีกเลี่ยงการรับผู้ลี้ภัยเข้าประเทศเพิ่มขึ้นในช่วงนี้
