เจ้าหน้าที่อินโดนีเซียรายงานว่า ยอดผู้เสียชีวิตจากเหตุการณ์แผ่นดินไหวและคลื่นสึนามิที่เกาะสุลาเวสี เพิ่มขึ้นเป็น 832 คน บาดเจ็บอีกราว 540 คน และคาดว่าจะพบศพผู้เสียชิวิตมากกว่านี้ ซึ่งอาจมีจำนวนหลายพันคน ในพื้นที่ชนบทห่างไกลที่เจ้าหน้าที่ยังไม่สามารถเข้าถึง

โฆษกของสำนักงานด้านภัยพิบัติของอินโดนีเซีย เป็นผู้ระบุตัวเลขผู้เสียชีวิตล่าสุดกับสำนักข่าว French Press Agency พร้อมแจ้งว่าได้มีการเผาศพผู้เสียชีวิตครั้งใหญ่แล้วเพื่อป้องกันโรคระบาดที่อาจตามมา

ขณะเดียวกัน มีผู้ประสบภัยที่ต้องการที่อยู่อาศัยชั่วคราวราว 17,000 คน

ในวันอาทิตย์ ประธานาธิบดี โจโค วีโดโด เดินทางถึงเมืองปาลู ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในพื้นที่ที่ได้รับความเสียหายมากที่สุด และได้สั่งการให้ทหารและเจ้าหน้าที่เตรียมพร้อมในการทำงานตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง

เจ้าหน้าที่กู้ภัย กล่าวว่า ยังมีประชาชนในเมืองปาลูจำนวนมากที่ติดอยู่ใต้ซากปรักหักพัง และได้ยินเสียงร้องขอความช่วยเหลือในหลายจุด และว่าเวลานี้ต้องการเครื่องมือที่ช่วยยกซากอาคารบ้านเรือนเหล่านั้นออกไป เพื่อให้สามารถเข้าช่วยเหลือคนที่ติดอยู่ด้านในได้ทันเวลา

แผ่นดินไหวแรงสั่นสะเทือนขนาด 7.5 ริคเตอร์ และคลื่นสึนามิ ถล่มเมืองปาลู ทางตอนกลางของเกาะสุลาเวสี ของอินโดนีเซีย เมื่อวันศุกร์ สร้างความเสียหายหนัก และเกิดอาฟเตอร์ช็อคตามมาหลายระลอก

ทั้งนี้ อินโดนีเซียตั้งอยู่บนแนววงแหวนแห่งไฟ ที่เกิดแผ่นดินไหวบ่อยครั้งในรอบปี โดยเหตุการณ์ล่าสุด คือ เหตุแผ่นดินไหวหลายครั้งในช่วงเดือนกรกฎาคมถึงสิงหาคม ที่เกาะลอมบ็อก และเกาะบาหลี คร่าชีิวิตอย่างน้อย 500 ราย
