Weekend With VOA Covers New Synthetic Drug For Malaria - 2004-08-26

Listen as Khun Prabhassara looks into a new drug that could help the fight against malaria with just three tablets. Malaria can be treated with the drug called OZ277, which is modelled after artemesinin, which is a Chinese herbal medicine extracted from wormwood plants. The problem with using artemesinin is that it is extremely expensive, which puts it out of reach of the countries that need it most. Thus, the new drug is synthetic and mass produced, and, although it is very similar yet more powerful, it is more affordable. Since a vast majority of the victims of malaria are children under 5 years old, the breakthrough drug is extremely important in the fight against malaria.

Also covered in the show are a review of the top five movies as well as an in depth look at the movie "Alien Vs. Predator" with Khun Jesda and Khun Chamroen. This week's music selection is "Toxic" by the talented Britney Spears. Ending the show is an editorial on the U.S. Troop Realignment. Everyone here is having a great time putting this show together for you, and we hope you'll enjoy listening, too.
