สมาชิกรัฐสภาสหรัฐฯ รับปากจะอนุมัติความช่วยเหลือทางทหารและด้านมนุษยธรรมเพิ่มเติมให้แก่ชาวยูเครน ในขณะที่รัฐบาลยูเครนกำลังต่อสู้กับการรุกรานของรัสเซีย

รัฐบาลประธานาธิบดีโจ ไบเดน ได้ขอให้รัฐสภาสหรัฐฯ อนุมัติความช่วยเหลือด้านมนุษยธรรม เศรษฐกิจและการทหารให้แก่ยูเครน มูลค่ารวม 10,000 ล้านดอลลาร์

ประธานสภาผู้แทนราษฎรสหรัฐฯ แนนซี เพโลซี ระบุในจดหมายที่ส่งให้สมาชิกพรรคเดโมแครตในวันอาทิตย์ว่า "รัฐสภาสหรัฐฯ จะผ่านร่างกฎหมายความช่วยเหลือฉุกเฉินให้แก่ยูเครนในสัปดาห์นี้"

อย่างไรก็ตาม แม้สมาชิกรัฐสภาอเมริกันจากทั้งสองพรรคต่างมีความเห็นตรงกันในเรื่องความช่วยเหลือที่ให้แก่ยูเครน แต่ส่วนใหญ่กลับไม่เห็นด้วยกับการกำหนดเขตห้ามบินเหนือยูเครนตามที่รัฐบาลกรุงเคียฟขอร้องเพื่อป้องกันการโจมตีทางอากาศของรัสเซีย

ส.ว. มาร์โค รูบิโอ จากพรรครีพับลิกัน กล่าวกับรายการ “This Week” ของเอบีซีในวันอาทิตย์ว่า มีหลายอย่างที่สหรัฐฯ สามารถช่วยเหลือเพื่อให้ยูเครนปกป้องตัวเองได้ แต่คนทั่วไปต้องทำความเข้าใจก่อนว่า "เขตห้ามบิน" หมายความว่าอย่างไร พร้อมระบุว่า "การกำหนดเขตห้ามบิน อาจหมายถึงสงครามโลกครั้งที่สาม"

ทางด้าน ส.ว.คริส เมอร์ฟีย์ จากพรรคเดโมแครต กล่าวกับรายการ Fox News ว่า หากตนเป็นประธานาธิบดียูเครนก็จะขอให้มีการกำหนดเขตห้ามบินเช่นกัน แต่ปัญหาคือเขตห้ามบินเหนือยูเครนนั้นไม่สามารถเกิดขึ้นได้จริง

ทางด้านรัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศสหรัฐฯ แอนโทนี บลิงเคน ซึ่งอยู่ระหว่างการเยือนยุโรปตะวันออก กล่าวว่า ประธานาธิบดีไบเดนได้รับการติดต่อจากประธานาธิบดีโวโลดีเมียร์ เซเลนสกี เพื่อขอความช่วยเหลือทางด้านเครื่องบินรบให้แก่ยูเครน ซึ่งผู้นำสหรัฐฯ กำลังพิจารณาเรื่องนี้

ด้านเอกอัครราชทูตยูเครนประจำสหรัฐฯ ออกซานา มาร์คาโรวา ให้สัมภาษณ์กับ Fox News เช่นกัน โดยขอให้สหรัฐฯ ช่วยส่งความช่วยเหลือเป็นอาวุธต่อต้านอากาศยานและความช่วยเหลือทางทหารอื่น ๆ ให้แก่ยูเครน พร้อมทั้งกล่าวว่า "เราควรระบุว่ารัสเซียเป็น รัฐก่อการร้าย"

ทางรัฐมนตรีต่างประเทศสหรัฐฯ กล่าวว่า มีรายงานที่น่าเชื่อถือว่า ทหารรัสเซียได้ใช้การโจมตีอย่างเจาะจงไปที่พลเรือนยูเครน ซึ่งถือว่าเป็น "การก่ออาชญากรรมสงคราม" และมีรายงานว่า กองทัพรัสเซียใช้อาวุธต้องห้ามบางอย่างด้วย

ส่วน ส.ส.อาเดรียโน เอสปาอิลลัต จากพรรคเดโมแครต ระบุทางทวิตเตอร์ว่า "ปูตินต้องถูกดำเนินคดีในข้อหาอาชญากรสงคราม และขอให้บรรดาสมาชิกรัฐสภาสหรัฐฯ สนับสนุนมติที่ให้ลงโทษผู้นำรัสเซียในความผิดฐานก่ออาชญากรรมต่อมวลมนุษย์ด้วย"
