ทำเนียบขาวมีแถลงการณ์ในวันเสาร์ว่า เจ้าหน้าที่สหรัฐฯกำลังตรวจสอบว่าวีดิโอดังกล่าวเป็นของจริงหรือไม่

ขบวนการรัฐอิสลาม ISIS เผยแพร่วีดิโอตัดศีรษะตัวประกันชาวญี่ปุ่นคนที่สองในวันเสาร์ทางอินเทอร์เน็ต สองวันหลังจากผ่านกำหนดเส้นตายวันสุดท้ายที่กลุ่ม ISIS กำหนดไว้

วีดีโอที่เผยแพร่ในวันเสาร์มีลักษณะคล้ายกับวีดีโอชิ้นก่อนๆ คือมีภาพนายเคนจิ โกโตะ นั่งคุกเข่าในชุดสีส้ม และมีชายในชุดคลุมหัวสีดำยืนถือมีด ก่อนที่ภาพจะตัดไปเป็นภาพนายโกโตะนอนเสียชีวิตพร้อมมีศีรษะของเขาเองวางอยู่บนตัว

ทางการญี่ปุ่นประณามวีดิโอชิ้นนี้อย่างรุนแรง และได้จัดการประชุมคณะรัฐมนตรีฉุกเฉินทันที

นายเคนจิ โกโตะ นักข่าวและพลเมืองญี่ปุ่นวัย 47 ปี ถูกกลุ่ม ISIS จับตัวไว้เมื่อปีที่แล้วในพื้นที่ที่อยู่ปกครองของกลุ่ม ISIS ในซีเรีย ขณะกำลังเดินทางไปช่วยนายฮเรูนะ ยูคาวะ ตัวประกันอีกคนหนึ่งที่ถูกสังหารไปก่อนแล้ว

ก่อนหน้านี้ รัฐบาลญี่ปุ่นมีแถลงการณ์ว่า ญี่ปุ่นกำลังทำงานร่วมกับรัฐบาลจอร์แดน เพื่อหาทางปล่อยตัวนายโกโตะ เป็นอิสระให้ได้ เลขาธิการคณะรัฐมนตรีญี่ปุ่ กล่าวว่าการช่วยชีวิตตัวประกันถือเป็นภารกิจสำคัญที่สุดของรัฐบาลญี่ปุ่น ดังนั้นทางรัฐบาลจึงพยายามทำงานร่วมกับรัฐบาลประเทศ และผู้นำกลุ่มศาสนาต่างๆ เพื่อช่วยเหลือนายโกโตะ
