น.ส.ปัก กึน เฮ บุตรีวัย 60 ปีของอดีตประธานาธิบดีปัก จุง ฮี ชนะการเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดีของเกาหลีใต้เมื่อวันพุธในฐานะตัวแทนของพรรค New Frontier แนวทางอนุรักษ์นิยมซึ่งเป็นพรรครัฐบาลในปัจจุบัน โดยเธอจะเข้ารับตำแหน่งประธานาธิบดีอย่างเป็นทางการในวันที่ 25 กุมภาพันธ์ปีหน้า
ว่าที่ประธานาธิบดีปัก กึน เฮ กล่าวว่าเธอจะเริ่มยุคสมัยแห่งความสุขของประชาชนซึ่งทุกคนจะได้รับความพอใจ และความฝันต่างๆ จะมีโอกาสเป็นความจริง แต่คาดว่าหลังจากที่เข้ารับตำแหน่งแล้วปัก กึน เฮจะต้องพบกับปัญหาท้าทายหลายด้านทั้งทางเศรษฐกิจและการเมือง เพราะขณะนี้เกาหลีใต้มีปัญหาเรื่องช่องว่างของรายได้และปัญหาว่างงานในกลุ่มคนหนุ่มสาวในระดับสูง ปัญหาเศรษฐกิจที่กำลังชะลอตัว และปัญหากรณีพิพาทเรื่องดินแดนกับญี่ปุ่น รวมทั้งเกาหลีเหนือก็จะยังเป็นภัยคุกคามด้านความมั่นคงและการทูตสำหรับเกาหลีใต้ด้วย

ปัก กึน เฮ เคยใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในทำเนียบประธานาธิบดีมาก่อนเพราะเป็นบุตรีของอดีตประธานาธิบดีปัก จุง ฮี ซึ่งทำรัฐประหารในเกาหลีใต้เมื่อปีพ.ศ. 2504 และสถาปนาตนเองขึ้นเป็นผู้นำประเทศ ประธานาธิบดีปัก จุง ฮีครองอำนาจอยู่ได้ 18 ปี และต้องเสียชีวิตลงจากการลอบสังหารของหัวหน้าหน่วยงานข่าวกรองของตนเอง
