ปธน. Barack Obama ตั้งอดีตวุฒิสมาชิก Chuck Hagel อดีตนักรบสงครามเวียดนาม ให้เป็น รมต. กลาโหมคนใหม่และตั้งผู้เชี่ยวชาญเรื่องการปราบก่อการร้าย John Brennan ให้เป็นผอ. CIA

ปธน. Obama กล่าวว่า นาย Hagel เข้าใจถึงการส่งลูกหลานชาวอเมริกันไปรบในต่างแดนเป็นอย่างดี และว่าเขารู้ดีว่าเรื่องแบบนี้เป็นเรื่องที่สหรัฐต้องทำในเงื่อนไขที่จำเป็นอย่างยิ่งเท่านั้น

ส่วนนาย Brennan เป็นผู้สนับสนุนการใช้เครื่องบินที่ไม่มีคนขับหรือ Drone โจมตีกลุ่มก่อการร้าย หากทุกอย่างราบรื่น เขาจะเข้ารับตำแหน่งแทน พลเอก David Petraeus อดีตผู้อำนวยการ CIA ที่ลาออกจากตำแหน่งท่ามกลางข่าวอื้อฉาวกรณีที่เขามีความสัมพันธ์นอกสมรส

อย่างไรก็ตามทั้งคู่ตกเป็นเป้าถูกวิพากษ์วิจารณ์ Ted Cruz สว. จาก Republican รัฐ Texas กล่าวว่า Chuck Hagel มีท่าทีที่แข็งกร้าวกับอิสราเอลทั้งที่ควรจะเป็นมิตรมากกว่านี้ ขณะเดียวกันก็อ่อนโยนเกินไปกับอิหร่านทั้งที่น่าจะแข็งขันเรื่องการกดดันอิหร่านให้หยุดการพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีนิวเคลียร์
ด้านการสนับสนุนยุทธวิธีที่ใช้ Drone ปราบผู้ก่อการร้ายของนาย Brennan ก็ถูกตั้งคำถามว่าเป็นเรื่องที่ถูกจริยธรรมหรือไม่
