วิทยุของทางการเกาหลีเหนือรายงานในข่าวภาคเช้าเมื่อวันจันทร์ที่ 16 กรกฎาคมว่า รองจอมพล Ri Yong Ho ผู้ดำรงตำแหน่งผู้บัญชาการทหารบกของประเทศถูกปลดออกจากทุกตำแหน่ง โดยรายงานระบุว่าคณะกรรมการกลางของพรรคคนงานเกาหลีเหนือมีมติเมื่อวันอาทิตย์ให้รองจอมพล Ri Yong Ho ผู้นี้พ้นจากทุกตำแหน่งด้วยเหตุผลด้านสุขภาพ ตำแหน่งที่สำคัญของนายทหารระดับสูงผู้นี้นอกจากผู้บัญชาการทหารบกแล้วยังรวมถึงตำแหน่งในคณะกรรมการบริหารโปลิตบุโร ซึ่งเป็นคณะกรรมการทางการเมืองที่ทรงอิทธิพลที่สุดของประเทศด้วย

การประกาศปลดนายทหารระดับสูงผู้เคยดำรงตำแหน่งสำคัญหลายตำแหน่งภายใต้นาย Kim Jong Il บิดาผู้ล่วงลับไปแล้วของของนาย Kim Jong Un ผู้นำเกาหลีเหนือคนปัจจุบันได้สร้างความประหลาดใจให้หลายฝ่าย โดยนาย Kim Hyung-suk โฆษกกระทรวงการรวมประเทศของเกาหลีใต้ชี้ว่าเป็นเรื่องผิดปกติอย่างมาก ที่มีการรายงานข่าวเรื่องการปลดนี้ในเวลาไม่ถึงหนึ่งวันหลังจากที่รองจอมพล Ri Yong Ho ถูกถอดจากทุกตำแหน่ง ส่วนนาย Chon Hyun-joon นักวิเคราะห์อาวุโสของสถาบัน Korea Institute for national Unification ของรัฐบาลเกาหลีใต้ก็ตั้งข้อสังเกตว่า ถึงแม้รองจอมพล Ri Yong Ho จะป่วยจริง แต่ก็ไม่ควรถูกปลดจากทุกตำแหน่งในลักษณะเช่นนี้ และว่าไม่น่าสงสัยเลยว่ารองจอมพล Ri Yong Ho เป็นฝ่ายที่พ่ายแพ้ในการต่อสู้ทางการเมืองระหว่างผู้นิยมแนวทางแบบแข็งกร้าวกับผู้เดินทางสายกลางในเกาหลีเหนือ และคาดว่าการเปลี่ยนแปลงตัวบุคคลครั้งนี้จะเปิดโอกาสให้นาย Kim Jong Un ผู้นำรุ่นใหม่ของเกาหลีเหนือมีความคล่องตัวและมีความยืดหยุ่นมากขึ้นในการดำเนินนโยบายต่างประเทศ
