เกาหลีเหนือเคยทดสอบเทคโนโลยีอาวุธนิวเคลียร์มาแล้ว 2 ครั้งเมื่อปี พ.ศ 2549 และ 2552 และล่าสุดเมื่อเดือน ธ.ค เกาหลีเหนือก็เพิ่งทดลองปล่อยจรวดบรรทุกดาวเทียมสู่วงโคจรรอบโลกซึ่งขัดกับมติของสหประชาชาติ เนื่องจากเป็นเทคโนโลยีแบบเดียวกับที่สามารถใช้กับการยิงจรวดขีปนาวุธบรรทุกหัวรบนิวเคลียร์

หลังเหตุการณ์เมื่อเดือน ธ.ค จีนมีท่าทีสนับสนุนมติล่าสุดของสหประชาชาติที่ต้องการให้เพิ่มมาตรการลงโทษเกาหลีเหนือ ซึ่งรวมถึงการเพิ่มการตรวจสอบธุรกรรมการเงินต่างๆของรัฐบาลเกาหลีเหนือ และมาตรการห้ามออกวีซ่าให้กับบุคคลที่มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับโครงการนิวเคลียร์ของเกาหลีเหนือ

นักวิเคราะห์หลายคนเชื่อว่าจีนน่าจะสนับสนุนให้มีมาตรการลงโทษเกาหลีเหนือสถานเบา เช่นการอายัดบัญชีธนาคารหรือยกเลิกสัญญาการค้าต่างๆกับเกาหลีเหนือ เพื่อให้มีผลกระทบทางเศรษฐกิจต่อเกาหลีเหนือน้อยที่สุด ในขณะเดียวกันจีนก็จะให้ความช่วยเหลือเกาหลีเหนือในด้านมุษยธรรมต่อไปในฐานะประเทศพันธมิตรเก่าแก่

เมื่อเร็วๆนี้ สำนักข่าว Yonhap ของเกาหลีใต้ รายงานว่าบริษัทของเกาหลีเหนือและธุรกิจที่เกี่ยวข้องกับรัฐบาลเปียงยางได้เริ่มใช้มาตรการป้องกันเพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงมาตรการลงโทษทางการเงินของจีน เช่นเริ่มถอนเงินออกจากบัญชีธนาคารในจีน หรือเปลี่ยนชื่อบริษัทที่ทำธุรกิจในจีน

ศาสตราจารย์ Jin Canrong แห่งม.Renmin ในจีน กล่าวกับ VOA ว่า ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างจีนกับเกาหลีเหนือเสื่อมถอยลงหลังจากเกาหลีเหนือทำการยิงจรวดปล่อยดาวเทียมเมื่อเดือน ธ.ค และอาจย่ำแย่ลงไปอีกหากเกาหลีเหนือดื้อดึงทดสอบอาวุธนิวเคลียร์
