เกล็ดเลือดที่อุดตันเป็นสาเหตุของอาการที่เป็นอัตรายถึงชีวิตเช่น หัวใจวาย เส้นเลือดฝอยแตกในสมอง และการที่ก้อนเลือดเคลื่อนไปอุดตันหลอดเลือดในปอด

ขณะนี้มียารักษาอาการเกล็ดเลือดจับตัวกัน เช่น tissue plasminogen activator แต่วิธีนี้มีผลข้างเคียงที่อันตรายคืออาจทำให้เลือดออกภายใน
แต่ล่าสุด แพทย์จาก Harvard University กำลังพัฒนาวิธีนำยาละลายเกล็ดเลือดเข้ารักษาเส้นโลหิตอุดตันที่มีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้นโดยใช้วัตถุขนาดเล็กมาก หรือ nanoparticles เป็นพาหนะ ผลการทดลองในหนูพบว่าอัตราการรอดชีวิตมีสูง นอกจากนั้นยังมีผลกระทบที่อัตราน้อยกว่าวิธีที่ใช้อยู่ขณะนี้
อาจารย์ Don Ingber จาก Harvard University กล่าวว่า การใช้ nanoparticles เป็นพาหนะเป็นตัวนำพายาเข้าไปสลายการอุดตัน ได้ผลดีโดยไม่ต้องใช้ตัวยามาก ดังนั้นจึงมีผลข้างเคียงที่อันตรายน้อยกว่าวิธีปกติ
