Park Geun-hye ลูกสาวอดีตผู้นำเผด็จการเกาหลีใต้ Park Chung-hee ได้เปรียบคู่แข่งเล็กน้อยด้านคะแนนนิยมหนึ่งวันก่อนการเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดี หากชนะเลือกตั้งในวันพุธ (19 ธันวาคม) เธอจะเป็นผู้นำคนแรกของเกาหลีใต้ที่เป็นผู้หญิง

ทั้ง Park Geun-hye ซึ่งมาจากพรรครัฐบาล (New Frontier Party หรือ Saenuri) และคู่แข่ง นาย Moon Jae-in จากพรรค Democratic United Party ต่างเน้นนโยบายเศรษฐกิจ โดยฝ่ายแรกต้องการสร้างชนชั้นกลางที่แข็งแรง ส่วน Moon Jae-in ต้องการลดช่องว่างทางรายได้ของคนในสังคม

นอกจากนั้น Park Geun-hye ต้องการใช้นโยบายสายกลางกับกลุ่มธุรกิจใหญ่หรือที่เรียกตามภาษาเกาหลีว่า Chaebol ส่วนฝ่ายตรงข้ามต้องการใช้กฎที่เข้มงวดด้านการถือหุ้นข้ามบริษัทของ Chaebols และยังต้องการแก้สัญญาการค้ากับสหรัฐอีกด้วย

อย่างไรก็ตาม Park Geun-hye มีนโนบายที่แข็งกร้าวกับเกาหลีเหนือมากกว่า Moon Jae-in เพราะเธอกล่าวว่าเกาหลีเหนือต้องขอโทษเกาหลีใต้กรณีที่กรุงเปียงยางยั่วยุทางทหารปีที่แล้ว ก่อนการเจรจาใดๆในระดับผู้นำ แต่ Moon Jae-in บอกว่าต้องการประชุมสุดยอดกับเกาหลีเหนือในปีแรกถ้าเขาชนะเลือกตั้ง
