ผู้บัญชาการกองทัพเรืออินเดีย พลเรือเอก D.K. Admiral กล่าวก่อนหน้าในสัปดาห์นี้ว่า อินเดียเตรียมพร้อมที่จะใช้กองเรือของประเทศเพื่อป้องกันผลประโยชน์ของชาติในทะเลจีนใต้หากจำเป็น

อินเดียมีผลประโยชน์ในโครงการสำรวจและผลิตน้ำมันและก๊าสธรรมชาติผ่านบริษัทของรัฐที่ชื่อ Oil and Natural Gas Corporation ที่ลงทุนในเขตเศรษฐกิจจำเพาะของเวียดนามในทะเลจีนใต้ ซึ่งบริเวณนั้นเวียดนามและจีนมีข้อพิพาททางดินแดนกันอยู่

ทางด้านจีน โฆษกกระทรวงต่างประเทศของจีน Hong Lei กล่าวว่าจีนมีสิทธิเหนือบริเวณในทะเลจีนใต้อย่างหาข้อหักล้างไม่ได้ และจีนไม่ยอมรับการเข้าทำโครงการสำรวจน้ำมันโดยการอ้างสิทธิแต่เพียงฝ่ายเดียว

นักวิเคราะห์กล่าวว่าอินเดียคงตกเป็นฝ่ายตั้งรับแต่ฝ่ายเดียวไม่ได้อีกต่อไป จึงต้องแสดงความประสงค์อย่างชัดเจนว่าพร้อมใช้แสนยานุภาพของกองทัพเรือ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเมื่อข้อขัดแย้งกับจีนเกี่ยวพันกับผลประโยชน์และอำนาจอธิปไตยของชาติ
