มีคนเกือบ 200 ล้านคนทั่วโลกที่ติดเชื้อตับอักเสบชนิดซีทุกปีๆ เชื้อไวรัสตับอักเสบซี ติดต่อผ่านทางเพศสัมพันธุ์และการเปลี่ยนถ่ายเลือดที่มีเชื้อไวรัสชนิดนี้ อาการอักเสบในตับเป็นการป่วยที่เรื้อรังและทำให้ผู้ป่วยร่างกายอ่อนแอ ล่าสุดทีมนักวิจัยชาวเดนนิช ค้นพบว่าหากผู้ป่วยตับอักเสบชนิดซี ได้รับการบำบัดดัวยยาต้านไวรัส พวกเขามีอาการอักเสบในตับน้อยลงและลดความเสี่ยงต่อการเป็นมะเร็งในตับลงอย่างมาก

ในเวลาต่อมา

เมื่อเปรียบเทียบผลการทดลองรักษาผู้ป่วยทั้งสองกลุ่มแล้วพบว่าการบำบัดเชื้อไวรัสตับอักเสบซีด้วยยาต้านไวรัสอินเตอเฟอรอน ช่วยลดโอกาสเสี่ยงเป็นมะเร็งตับลงได้ 47 เปอร์เซ็นต์ นักวิจัยทำการเผ้าติกตามผู้ป่วยในการทดลองรักษาทั้งสองกลุ่มนานตั้งแต่ 5 ถึง8 ปี
