นักจิตวิทยาจากมหาวิทยาลัยสามแห่งในสหรัฐฯ ใช้เวลาห้าปีร่วมกันศึกษากลุ่มตัวอย่างราว 850 คนซึ่งประสบความเครียดในชีวิตอย่างหนักจากเรื่องต่างๆ เช่นปัญหาด้านการเงิน การตกงาน โรคภัยไข้เจ็บ และการเสียชีวิตของคนใกล้ชิด และพบว่าผู้ที่ให้ความช่วยเหลือแก่คนอื่นจะมีอัตราการเสียชีวิตน้อยกว่าผู้ที่ไม่ให้ความช่วยเหลือกับใครเลย โดยการให้ความช่วยเหลือแก่ผู้อื่นนี้มีผลทางบวกในการช่วยปกป้องสุขภาพทั้งใจและกาย และนักวิจัยอธิบายว่าการให้ในรูปแบบต่างๆ เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของพฤติกรรมทางสังคมเชิงบวกซึ่งช่วยลดผลลบของความเครียดในชีวิตได้

นักวิจัยยกตัวอย่างการให้ความช่วยเหลือแก่คนอื่นว่ารวมถึงการช่วยขับรถพาคนไปส่งในที่ต่างๆ การช่วยทำงานบ้าน หรือการช่วยดูแลเด็ก เป็นต้น

รายงานชื่อ “Giving to Others and the Association Between Stress and Mortality” นี้ตีพิมพ์ในวารสาร American Journal of Public Health ฉบับออนไลน์ประจำวันที่ 17 มกราคม 2556
