อดีตสว. Chuck Hagel ที่ได้รับเสนอชื่อให้เป็น รมต. กลาโหมคนใหม่มีภารกิจสำคัญเรื่องแผนถอนทหารออกจากอาฟกานิสถานและมาตรการตัดงบของ Pentagon เขาเคยรบในสงครามเวียดนามและได้รับเหรียญเกียรติยศ Purple Heart สองครั้ง

เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2554 เขาให้สัมภาษณ์หนังสือพิมพ์ Financial Times ของอังกฤษว่าเขาสนับสนุนการตัดงบประมาณที่ไม่จำเป็นของกระทรวงกลาโหม ขณะนี้ Pentagon มีแผนลดงบประมาณ 4 แสน 8 หมื่น 7 พันล้านดอลลาร์

นอกจากนั้นนาย Hagel ยังเคยวิพากษ์วิจารณ์รัฐบาลอเมริกันที่ยังควบคุมสถานการณ์ในอาฟกานิสถานไม่ได้เท่าที่ควรหลังจากที่ส่งทหารไปสิบปีแล้วก็ตาม ตามตารางที่สหรัฐวางแผนไว้ ทหารอเมริกันจะออกจากอาฟกานิสถานก่อนสิ้นปีหน้า

ผู้สันทัดกรณีมองว่า นาย Hagel น่าจะมีท่าที่เช่นเดียวกับรอง ปธน. Joe Biden ซึ่งต้องการลดกำลังทหารในอาฟกานิสถานอย่างรวดเร็ว
