จีนสร้างความไม่พอใจต่อเวียดนามและอีกหลายประเทศหลังใช้ภาพแผนที่ของจีนที่รวมเอาดินแดนที่มีข้อพิพาทกับหลายประเทศตีพิมพ์ในหนังสือเดินทางรุ่นใหม่

ภาพแผนที่ในหนังสือเดินทางรุ่นใหม่ของจีนรวมเอาดินแดนในทะเลจีนใต้ทั้งหมดเป็นของจีน ทั้งที่บริเวณดังกล่าวมีเวียดนามและอีกสี่ประเทศอ้างกรรมสิทธิเช่นกัน นอกจากนั้นยังถือว่าดินแดนที่จีนยังมีข้อพิพาทกับอินเดียว่าเป็นของจีนด้วย

โฆษกกระทรวงต่างประเทศของเวียดนาม Luong Thanh Nghi กล่าวว่าได้แสดงความไม่พอใจอย่างเป็นทางการไปแล้ว อย่างไรก็ตามยังให้คนจีนเดินทางเข้าเวียดนามได้แต่พวกเขาเหล่านั้นต้องใช้วีซ่าที่ติดกับกระดาษซึ่งแยกออกมาจากเล่มหนังสือเดินทางที่มีปัญหา
