ทนายด้านสิทธิมนุษยชนจีนหลายคนตั้งข้อสังเกตว่าปัจจัยการเมืองอาจอยู่เบื้องหลังคำตัดสินของศาลในคดีวางยาพิษสังหารนักธุรกิจอังกฤษ นาย Neil Heywood ซึ่งนาง Gu Kailai ถูกตัดสินประหารชิวิตโดยศาลให้รอลงอาญาสองปี

นาง Gu เป็นภรรยาของ Bo Xilai อดีตผู้นำพรรคคอมมิวนิสต์จีนที่เมืองชงชิง ทนายหลายคนมองว่าคำตัดสินของแสดงให้เห็นถึงความพยายามที่จะแยกคดีนี้ออกจากผู้บริหารพรรคคอมมิวนิสต์และนาย Bo เพื่อจำกัดแรงกระเพื่อมทางการเมือง

ทนาย Pu Zhiqiang กล่าวว่าคดีนี้เปิดประเด็นเรื่องจริยธรรมการทำธุรกิจของนาง Gu หลายประเด็น แต่น่าสังเกตว่าทำไมนาง Gu จึงถูกดำเนินคดีเฉพาะแต่เรื่องฆาตกรรม และไม่พูดถึงเรื่องคอร์รับชั่น
