จำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวพม่าคาดว่าจะเพิ่มเป็นหนึ่งล้านคนอีกสองปีข้างหน้าจาก 300,000 เมื่อปีที่แล้ว

ผู้ช่วยกระทรวงการท่องเที่ยวพม่า Htay Aung กล่าวว่าจำเป็นต้องยกระดับบุคคลากร สถานที่ท่องเที่ยวและระบบคมนาคมเพื่อรับจำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวที่เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างมาก

จำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวพม่าคาดว่าจะเพิ่มเป็นหนึ่งล้านคนอีกสองปีข้างหน้าซึ่งเป็นปีที่พม่าเป็นเจ้าภาพการประชุม ASEAN เมื่อปีที่แล้วพม่ามีนักท่องเที่ยวจำนวน 300,000 คน

นักท่องเที่ยวจากประเทศไทยเป็นกลุ่มที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในพม่า ตามมาด้วยญี่ปุ่น และเกาหลีใต้

อย่างไรก็ตาม ขณะนี้พม่ามีจำนวนห้องพักโรงแรมจำนวนเพียง 25,000 ห้อง ทั่วประเทศ และจะพยายามเพิ่มจำนวนห้องพักโดยการปรับปรุงอพาร์ทเมนต์ให้เป็นห้องพักโรงแรมอีกจำนวน 500 ห้อง นอกจากนักท่องเที่ยวแล้ว นักธุรกิจเดินทางไปพม่ามากขึ้น ยิ่งทำให้จำนวนโรงแรมและห้องพักไม่พอเพียง

ถึงแม้ว่าจะมีความต้องการของนักท่องเที่ยงในพม่าเพิ่มขึ้น แต่ผู้ประกอบการธุรกิจท่องเที่ยวกล่าวว่า ยังประสบปัญหาเรื่องการหาห้องพักให้ลูกค้า
คุณ Luzi Matzig จากบริษัท Asian Trails ในกรุงเทพกล่าวถึงอุปสรรคเรื่องการปั่นราคาห้องพักและข้อจำกัดที่บางโรงแรมไม่ยอมให้บริษัทท่องเที่ยวทำสัญญาจองห้องทีละหลายๆห้อง
ขณะนี้ Asian Development Bank กำลังช่วยพม่าทำแผนแม่บทเพื่อวางแนงทางพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมท่องเที่ยวของพม่า
