ตำรวจพม่าใช้น้ำฉีดและระเบิดควันเพื่อสลายการชุมนุมต่อต้านการขยายเหมืองทองแดง Letpadaung ที่มีจีนให้การสนับสนุน ใกล้ๆกับเมือง Mandalay ขณะที่นางออง ซาน ซู จีเสนอตัวช่วยไกล่เกลี่ย

ผู้สื่อข่าววีโอเอที่อยู่ในเหตุการณ์กล่าวว่ามีพระบาดเจ็บอย่างน้อย 23 รูป หนึ่งในนั้นบาดเจ็บสาหัส นอกจากนั้นยังมีคน 10 คนที่ยังหาตัวไม่พบ และอีก 6 คนถูกจับตัวไป

ทางด้านทางการพม่าออกแถลงการณ์ปฏิเสธคำอ้างที่ว่ารัฐบาลใช้อาวุธเคมี

ส่วน นาย Ohn Kyaing โฆษกของนางออง ซาน ซู จี ผู้นำฝ่ายค้านกล่าวว่า นางซู จีมีแผนเดินทางเข้าพบผู้นำการประท้วง และจะมีการเสนอคำแนะนำให้รัฐบาลอย่างเป็นทางการในเวลาต่อไป

ในอดีตการประท้วงของมวลชนระดับรากหญ้าเคยทำให้จีนต้องหยุดพัฒนาโครงการสาธารณูปโภคในพม่า เช่นโครงการเขื่อน Myitsone

แต่ครั้งนี้จีนยืนยันที่จะเดินหน้าต่อ โดยที่โฆษกกระทรวงต่างประเทศของจีน นาย Hong Lei กล่าวว่าโครงการเหมืองทองแดงแห่งนี้เป็นประโยชน์ต่อทั้งสองประเทศ และทั้งสองฝ่ายตัดสินใจร่วมกันไปแล้วเรื่องผลประโยชน์ รวมทั้งประเด็นเรื่องค่าตอบแทนต่อชาวบ้านที่ต้องย้ายที่อยู่ และแผนรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อม เขายังยืนยันด้วยว่าจีนทำตามกฎหมายและระเบียบต่างๆที่พม่ากำหนด
