รมต.กระทรวงการต่างประเทศของ Ecuador นาย Ricardo Patino ประกาศการตัดสินใจของรัฐบาลที่ให้นาย Julian Assange ไปลี้ภัยในประเทศได้ เมื่อวันพฤหัสบดีที่กรุง Quito นครหลวงของ Ecuador

เขากล่าวว่า หลังจากที่รัฐบาลได้ประมาณสถานการณ์อย่างเป็นธรรม ตามที่นาย Assange ได้อธิบายให้ฟัง รวมทั้งรับฟังเหตุผลตอบโต้และความหวั่นกลัวของเขาแล้ว ทำให้เป็นที่เข้าใจว่า เขาอาจต้องเผชิญกับการปรักปรำดำเนินคดีทางการเมืองได้ ถ้าไม่มีการดำเนินมาตรการที่เหมาะสม

ในอีกด้านหนึ่ง นาย William Hague รมต. กระทรวงการต่างประเทศของอังกฤษ กล่าวแสดงความผิดหวังกับการตัดสินใจของ Ecuador แต่ยืนยันว่า จะไม่มีผลกระทบแต่อย่างใดต่อแผนของอังกฤษในเรื่องนี้

รมต. กระทรวงการต่างประเทศของอังกฤษกล่าวว่า อังกฤษจะไม่อนุมัติให้นาย Julian Assange เดินทางออกนอกประเทศ และมุ่งมั่นที่จะส่งตัวเขาไปให้สวีเดนให้ได้

ขณะนี้ นาย Julian Assange ผู้ก่อตั้ง WikiLeaks กำลังพำนักอยู่ในสถานทูต Ecuador ในกรุงลอนดอน หลังจากที่เข้าไปขอลี้ภัยเมื่อเกือบสองเดือนที่แล้ว

รมต. William Hague ของอังกฤษกล่าวย้ำว่า ตามกฎหมายอังกฤษ เมื่อนาย Assange ได้ดำเนินการทุกทางเพื่ออุทธรณ์คดีของเขาเสร็จหมดแล้ว ทางการอังกฤษมีพันธกรณีผูกพันที่จะต้องส่งตัวเขาให้สวีเดน และก็ตั้งใจอย่างเต็มที่ที่จะทำตามความผูกพันนั้น

ผู้ก่อตั้ง WikiLeaks กลัวว่า สวีเดนจะส่งตัวเขาให้สหรัฐ ซึ่งอาจทำให้เขาต้องถูกดำเนินคดีเกี่ยวกับการเผยแพร่เอกสารลับหลายแสนฉบับ รวมทั้งโทรเลขทางการทูตของกระทรวงการต่างประเทศสหรัฐเกี่ยวกับสงครามในอิรัคและแอฟกานิสถาน

ในวันพฤหัสบดีเดียวกันนี้ มีผู้ประท้วงหลายสิบคน ไปชุมนุมอยู่ที่หน้าสถานทูต Ecuador ในกรุงลอนดอน เพื่อแสดงการสนับสนุนนาย Assange และยกย่องการตัดสินใจของ Ecuador

ผู้ประท้วงบางคนกล่าวแสดงความผิดหวังในจุดยืนของรัฐบาลอังกฤษ โดยอยากจะเห็นรัฐบาลให้การคุ้มครองสิทธิและเสรีภาพของนาย Assange มากกว่านี้ แทนที่จะยอมโอนอ่อนผ่อนตามความกดดันจากสหรัฐ
